The Dominican Republic was beautiful and rich with culture, and while I was there I stumbled upon Mamajuana, a typical drink of the Dominican. This is something commonly found in every household, and if you ask any native/local about it they will be glad to share the preparations of this drink with you. It is a mixture of medicinal plants and woods that has been cleansed in a wine mixture, emptied, and then filled with rum and honey (and the occasional raisin for extra sweetness). The longer it sits, the better it is. It is used as a common cure for colds, aches, internal cleansing, ect. In a way, this is the Domincan’s version of the American’s chicken noodle soup. I took a shot of the Mamajuana in the above picture! It is eight years old…and yes…I did drink it out of the bottle.
